I first started to think about what was in my laundry soap back when my youngest son was struggling badly with eczema. You can read more about our journey HERE, and what all I did to help his skin heal long term. Laundry soap was a huge culprit in any flare ups he would have, and I soon realized that most of what people use in their laundry soap, wasn’t doing them any favors.
If laundry soap isn’t something you have thought about, you aren’t alone. We think, oh…it comes off in the washer, how harmful can it be? Well, all laundry soap soaks into clothing which is absorbed by our skin and also inhaled. The potentially harmful effects of some of the chemicals in detergents range from skin or eye irritation to possibly much more serious, such as endocrine disruptors , some ingredients are even considered potential carcinogens.
Your endocrine system produces and regulates various hormones within your body, such as the thyroid, pineal, pituitary, ovaries and testes, pancreas, and adrenals — just to name a few. An endocrine disruptor is any compound or substance that affects the normal operation of this system.
Chemicals that are endocrine disruptors can impact any and every aspect of your health, from fertility issues and immune system suppression, to mood disorders such as depression and fatigue. One of the most common endocrine disruptors found in laundry detergents are NPEs.
NPE, or Nonylphenol Ethoxylate, is known as the ‘Gender Bender’. This inexpensive nonionic surfactant mimics estrogen in your body, leading to hormonal imbalance and, for some, cancer.
When this chemical is absorbed into your skin, kidney damage, liver damage, decreased testicular growth and sperm count, disrupted growth, and lowered metabolism can result.
Overall, just not worth it. We wash our clothes every day, and then put them on our bodies- and there are now some great options that clean your clothes just as effectively and smell good too.
My current favorite is DROPPS. I have been using them since last summer, and they truly wash our clothes so well. There are a few different scents(essentail oils) or you can get the unscented sensitive kind as well. They also have dishwasher pods we use and love too. I use the stain and odor clean scent laundry pods, and the scent booster pods for extra stinky laundry. I use their oxi-clean pods for whites as well. YOU CAN USE THIS LINK TO PURCHASE AND PUT IN THE CODE “DROPPS15” to GET $15 OFF YOUR ORDER
